Corrosion
Preventives: Volatile Organic Solvents Reduced or Eliminated
There
is increasing environmental pressure to avoid the release of VOCs
(volatile organic compounds) which contribute to low level ozone formation.
In response, Vapor-Tek Limited have developed a range of corrosion
preventives to replace the more traditional solvent-based products.

For
example, Vaporol, our combined contact and
vapour-phase inhibitor oil, is completely solvent free and can be
used to protect metal parts, machinery, spares, etc, during storage,
transportation and export. Vaporol's water-based equivalent, Aquavap,
works on the same principle and even eliminates the oil. Both Vaporol
and Aquavap are not classed as hazardous for use or transportation,
neither are they damaging to the environment.
VCI
(Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) paper may also be employed as a means
of VOC elimination. This paper is used to wrap metal parts and to
line packing cases. It has the added advantage that parts can be preserved
dry (no degreasing) and ready for immediate use.
In
the case of solvent-deposited films, although volatile solvent will
be present, it is possible to substantially reduce the release of
vapours, (up to 80% in some cases). This is achieved in Vapor-Tek's
Steelgard range of corrosion
preventives, by their much greater coverage rate than the usually
heavier 'traditional' coatings. An additional benefit is that the
Steelgards are much easier to apply and remove (often unnecessary)
and are generally much less messy.
Steelgard
'Export' grade is especially useful, since, even at the high coverage
rate, its thin film gives much greater protection than the thick,
treacly coatings of the past. As the name implies, 'Export' is intended
to provide protection in the most adverse conditions of salt, humidity,
acid fumes, etc, such as those encountered in deep-sea transportation.
Steelgard
Export is also used as an ultra long term protective. For example,
Royal Navy spares have been stored in unheated warehouses for more
than ten years and are still in pristine condition.
